The Yonge and Roehampton space that housed the beloved, dusty Duke of Kent pub for nearly 50 years has a new tenant: the Post-Nup Pub, from Atef Girgis, the restaurateur behind the now-defunct Prenup Pub and the ever-shapeshifting Village Idiot (later Genius, then Idiot again). True to Girgis’ track record of embracing the unexpected, the name itself pokes fun at Prenup’s earlier closure — a “second coming,” as it were, dressed up in a marriage-adjacent pun.
The self-aware humour didn’t stop at the name. Local Reddit users on r/FoodToronto quickly zeroed in on the pub’s newly mounted sign, which nods playfully to Brussels’ famous Manneken Pis statue — a fitting reference given that the original Prenup Pub built its reputation on an extensive selection of Belgian beers. Commenters had a field day with the pun-heavy branding, cementing the pub’s reputation for cheekiness before it had even opened its doors on a regular schedule.
Beyond the jokes, the Post-Nup Pub represents a genuine second act for a concept that clearly still has fans, taking over a space with deep neighbourhood roots at the corner of Yonge and Roehampton. For longtime Duke of Kent regulars mourning the loss of their old haunt, it’s at least a chance to see a new personality move into a familiar corner.
