The bookstore-meets-bar concept has already taken off in several major North American cities, and Toronto’s version has officially arrived: Book Bar, the latest addition to the city’s newly developing Mirvish Village, is open.
Located at 600 Markham St. — just a few doors down from the recently opened Badiali pizzeria location — Book Bar describes itself as a “layered third place where great stories and great drinks live side by side.” By day, the space functions as a bookstore and casual work or reading spot, complete with coffee and light bites. By night, it shifts into full bar service, with staff on hand who are just as ready to recommend a novel as they are a cocktail.
Beyond the day-to-night pivot, Book Bar is positioning itself as a genuine community hub, with a running calendar of cultural programming — talk series, book club-style events, and singles nights among them — designed to foster the kind of in-person connection that’s increasingly rare in a scrolling-heavy world.
The bar celebrated its grand opening on June 27 and 28, with a full slate of community programming already lined up for the months ahead. Combined with the momentum already building around Mirvish Village’s food hall and other openings on the block, Book Bar adds a distinctly different kind of draw to the strip — one built more around lingering than turning tables.
