Some restaurants announce themselves. The Gemini, tucked above Caldense Bakery on Dundas West, does the opposite — accessed by an unmarked stairway, with just 35 seats inside.
The restaurant comes from hospitality veterans Jenny Warne, Mike Couvillon, and Craig Spence, whose collective résumé includes stints at Bernhardt’s, Dreyfus, Jamil’s, and Midfield Wine Bar. Warne led the creative vision for the space, with the team describing the mood board as something like “a gnome’s after-hours club in the basement of a lighthouse” — an eccentric description that tracks once you’re inside, with warm wood, church pews, vintage light fixtures, and blown-glass clown decanters tucked into corners.
The food leans fish-forward and shared-plate style, largely inspired by restaurants in Manhattan and Brooklyn, brought to life by head chef Ken Envidia, who folds in Filipino, Mexican, Southeast Asian, and Chinese influences alongside the team’s original vision. On the drink side, wine takes centre stage — even in the cocktail program, which prioritizes sherry and vermouth specifically so it won’t clash with the kitchen’s brighter, more delicate flavours. Warne and Spence also run Bittern Imports, a natural, low-intervention wine import agency, giving the Gemini’s wine list access to rare bottles and small-batch imports not widely available elsewhere in the city.
Despite the level of curation behind every detail, the overall feel avoids coming across as overworked — it reads instead as personal, a little funny, a little romantic, and just weird enough to be memorable.
