Toronto’s food scene is wide, but Indigenous cuisine has often been hard to find. Big Boi Fry-Bread is changing that with a fast-casual menu built around fry bread and powwow tacos.
The restaurant was founded by Chef Ohitika and Chef Wilmer Noganosh III, who drew on their backgrounds in cooking and Indigenous advocacy to shape the concept. We call it the only Indigenous fast-food spot in the city, and it is officially taking orders.
Fry bread and powwow tacos have deep roots in community gatherings, so seeing them on a Toronto menu feels significant. It also shows how fast food does not have to mean generic. A quick-service model can be a vehicle for cultural storytelling, and for many diners this will be a first taste of the food.
Supporting a new, founder-led restaurant also makes a difference. Small businesses with a clear mission rely heavily on word of mouth, and a few honest recommendations can help one find its audience.
Order a powwow taco for lunch, share a photo and tell a friend about Big Boi Fry-Bread.
