It’s Time to Put an End to Freejays.

Iread last week that Starting From Scratch is now part of the Everleigh team for his Friday residency along with Dj Aristotle and Toddy Flores. And I was thinking that it’s so hard to find club owners nowadays that put customer satisfaction & customer experience ahead of being cheap and lining their pockets. Today, you see a lot of clubs hiring “freejays”. Guys who will dj/promote cheap/free just to get their name out there. And honestly, djs like this don’t belong in busy clubs. They don’t have the experience, and it really shows in how they play a club night.

A long time ago, when I was the resident at Republik on Saturday nights, my manager Arthur Geringas said some wise words to me. Our small room was the hip-hop room… I was the main room dj. The promoter from the hip-hop room asked Arthur to move his dj to the main room with me. This was a hip-hop dj, who didn’t know much about house music (which we played in the main room) or how to play the main room of a nightclub. When Arthur asked why they want him in the main room… the promoter told him that his dj books tables. That’s it? He books tables? This promoter was willing to alienate the thousand other people who already partied in the main room, for an inexperienced dj… just because he could book some tables. An inexperienced or greedy owner or manager would have jumped on this opportunity. But Arthur shut that down right away with these wise words: “My main room is not a training ground for inexperienced djs”.

Arthur gets it. The guys at Everleigh get it. They choose to hire excellent DJs. Just so the customer will have a better experience in their club. They didn’t need to bring Starting from Scratch on as a resident. Aristotle and Toddy are both amazing djs who can play that Friday night perfectly. Scratch came to do a guest spot once… The owners at Everleigh saw the crowd reaction, heard the synergy and decided to bring Scratch on as part of the team. Scratch doesn’t come cheap… I’m sure they could have saved a bunch of money by not hiring him. But they focus on customer satisfaction. They are the perfect example of club owners who last a long time in this ever-changing business, and I am grateful to be part of their team as their Saturday night resident!
