Celebrity Chef Claudio Aprile Is Bringing Bar Origin Back — and This Comeback Has Toronto Food Lovers Buzzing

Origin was one of the restaurants that defined Toronto dining in the 2010s. Claudio Aprile — celebrity chef, MasterChef Canada judge and culinary force of nature — opened the concept in 2010 and built it into a cultural landmark before closing both locations in 2017. Nearly a decade later, the concept is making a comeback, and if anything, the intervening years have only sharpened the anticipation.

Bar Origin — the revival — is opening in Burlington this June, and while the geography has changed, the spirit of the original is fully intact. Aprile describes the restaurant as “a diary of my culinary experiences, my travels, and my appreciation for bringing people together at the table.” The menu will revolve around 20 to 25 shareable dishes, recreating the interactive, open-kitchen dining experience that made the original Origin such a draw.

Beloved dishes from the original — crispy calamari with caramelized peanut sauce, duck pancakes with sesame brittle and pickled cucumber, the famous Japanese hand rolls — will return alongside new creations that reflect how Aprile’s cooking has evolved in the years since. The dining room seats 80, with an additional 20 bar seats and a 30-seat patio ready for Burlington’s summer season.

For those who remember Origin, this is a deeply anticipated return. For those who never had the chance to experience it, Bar Origin represents the first opportunity to taste a Toronto culinary legend in full form.
