A 35-Year Toronto Nightlife Institution Just Went Dark Overnight

Some closures are quiet. This one landed like a dropped needle on a record. El Convento Rico, the Latin dance club at 750 College St., announced on the evening of October 1 that it was shutting its doors immediately, ending a run of more than three decades.

The club first opened in 1992 in Little Italy and became a home base for Toronto’s queer and Latin communities, with drag performances, local DJs and a dance floor that mixed Latin rhythms with mainstream club hits. In its farewell message, the owners described the room as a home, a stage and a refuge, and thanked the performers, staff and regulars who gave the place its soul.

Why it closed is still unclear. The owners pointed to circumstances beyond their control, and no further detail has been made public. What they did say is that this is not meant to be goodbye forever, promising that El Convento Rico will rise again. There has been no word on a new location or a timeline.

For a city that has watched plenty of beloved venues vanish, the reaction says it all. Longtime patrons flooded social media with memories, and the loss is felt well beyond College Street, because spaces like this one are where nightlife communities are built.

Toronto’s club scene is always shifting, but the venues that welcome everyone, that give emerging performers a stage and that keep a dance floor going for 35 years are rare. Whatever comes next for El Convento Rico, its history deserves to be remembered.
