Toronto has never been shy about its love for a fancy-schmancy grocery store — from Summerhill Market to Eataly, the city has consistently supported the gourmet grocer format. McEwan, the chef-driven chain helmed by Mark McEwan, is now expanding that footprint with a new location at Bayview Village.
Currently operating just two locations — Shops at Don Mills and the TD Centre — McEwan has built an outsized reputation relative to its small footprint, largely thanks to one specific feature: its hot lunch counter. At the Financial District location in particular, office workers have come to treat the chef-prepared hot table as a near-religious midday ritual, lining up as soon as the clock strikes noon. The new Bayview Village location is set to take that offering even further, with an expanded international hot table, a made-to-order sandwich and salad counter, and a dedicated Omakase-to-Go counter rounding out an already-elevated Japanese selection.
The new space will slot into Bayview Village’s roster of more than 100 retail stores, offering the same carefully curated mix McEwan is known for: prepared meals, produce, deli, seafood, bakery, and flowers. The timing is notable, too — the move comes as some of McEwan’s fellow high-end grocers, like Pusateri’s, have had a rockier road in recent years, while others, including the Terroni-and-Cumbrae’s collaboration Stock TC, are similarly expanding into new territory.
