Ontario’s Vietnamese food scene has had one name on everyone’s lips for the past year, and it isn’t based anywhere near downtown Toronto — until now.
Banh Mi Nana, the Thornhill banh mi shop that sold through 2,000 sandwiches on its opening day alone in summer 2025, is the creation of the family behind Markham and Thornhill Vietnamese staples Electric Piggy and Nam 2. According to co-owner Michelle, the shop’s success comes down to an obsessive attention to detail: every loaf of bread, each deli meat, the pork floss, and even the butter are made entirely by hand in-house.
That formula is now heading to Scarborough, in the form of a new restaurant called Nam 6ix — the family’s first Toronto location, and, per Michelle, the largest in the group’s growing fleet. Beyond the signature Banh Mi Nana bread that built the brand’s reputation, Nam 6ix is expanding the menu into Vietnamese dishes that are harder to find across the GTA: sticky rice dumplings called banh it ram, savoury shrimp-filled pancakes known as banh khot, and steamed rice cakes called banh beo. The kitchen is also leaning into homestyle cooking, including canh chua, a sour soup, and ca kho, a clay-pot-braised fish, alongside a seafood lineup featuring stir-fried snails, grilled oysters, and crab.
Nam 6ix is set to soft-open on July 22, with a formal grand opening expected to follow shortly after — giving longtime Banh Mi Nana fans across the city a much shorter commute to get their fix.
