If you’re new to Toronto’s nightlife scene — or visiting from out of town — a few practical things are worth knowing before you line up outside REBEL or try to get into DPRTMNT on a Saturday night.
Age and ID: Ontario’s drinking age is 19. Bring government-issued photo ID — a passport is ideal for international visitors. Clubs check rigorously, and the doorstaff at major venues have seen every fake ID variation. Don’t bother.
Dress codes: Most clubs in the Entertainment District enforce a smart casual code. The specifics vary, but as a general rule: no athletic wear (jerseys, track pants, shorts), no hats, no baggy clothing. Women’s dress codes are far more flexible. Avoid sneakers at higher-end venues unless they’re obviously fashion sneakers rather than athletic ones. When in doubt, overdress.
Guestlists: Most major venues offer free guestlist entry before midnight. Sign up online in advance. This also typically gets you into the faster line, which on a busy Saturday can be the difference between 10 minutes and 45.
Bottle service: Table reservations at most clubs require a minimum spend rather than a flat fee. Be clear on what the minimum is and what’s included before you commit. At DPRTMNT, a $100 deposit secures the table.
Getting home: Take Uber, Lyft, or the TTC. The city runs reasonably well at night and is generally safe, but don’t walk alone through unfamiliar neighbourhoods at 3 a.m.
