Bay Street’s fine dining scene has long run on a fairly predictable playbook \u2014 power lunches, red meat, bottle service, and ownership that’s overwhelmingly male. Ambica Jain is betting that Toronto’s Financial District is ready for something else.<\/p>

Jain, the restaurateur behind Yorkville’s Michelin-recognized Adrak and co-founder of hospitality group MJAJ, is opening Raani this summer at 360 Bay Street \u2014 her most ambitious project yet. Where Adrak carved out a reputation on Avenue Road by bringing in specialized kitchen talent trained under major global chefs, Raani represents a significant step up in scale and ambition for Jain’s growing footprint in the city.<\/p>\n

The concept itself is deliberately specific. Raani translates to “queen,” and rather than leaning into the modern fusion approach that’s become common shorthand for upscale Indian dining, the kitchen is digging into a much narrower slice of history: the culinary traditions of 18th- and 19th-century India’s princely states. Instead of reinterpreting familiar dishes, the goal is to revive genuinely forgotten recipes, regional cooking techniques and flavour profiles that once defined royal courts \u2014 filtered through what Jain describes as a distinctly feminine lens, one built around confidence, precision and reclaiming spaces historically closed off to women.<\/p>

The physical space matches that ambition. Raani spans two levels and 162 seats, designed to function as a genuine day-to-night destination \u2014 equally suited to an executive lunch as a late dinner. Guests enter through a dedicated cocktail bar and lounge before moving into the main dining room, anchored by an exclusive 10-seat chef’s table at its centre. Downstairs, the building’s old bank vault has been converted into a subterranean private event space that will eventually double as a hidden speakeasy tucked beneath Bay Street.<\/p>\n

Specific menu items, the cocktail program and full interior design details are still under wraps ahead of opening, with reservation updates available through the restaurant’s website and Instagram.<\/p>\n
