Say the word “steakhouse” and most people picture the same thing: marble floors, low chandeliers, white tablecloths, and a wine list that requires its own table of contents. Shinji, which opened in the Financial District on July 8, is deliberately built to subvert that image.<\/p>\n

The restaurant comes from Harlo Entertainment, the team behind MIMI Chinese, Linny’s, and Sunny’s Chinese, along with Shake Shack’s Canadian expansion \u2014 a group that’s built a track record of taking familiar formats and rethinking them from the ground up. For Shinji, the inspiration is Japanese philosophies of ingredient-first cooking and refined minimalism, favouring quiet confidence over spectacle.<\/p>

The menu leans into that ingredient-led approach: wagyu sukiyaki standing in as the restaurant’s answer to surf and turf, large-format shareables like wagyu kamameshi and Osaka shrimp noodles, and smaller, decadent bites like poached Alaskan king crab with caviar and brown butter. The beef itself has been hand-sourced directly from the Kobe and Himeji regions of Japan, a detail the team treats as central rather than incidental to the whole concept.<\/p>\n

According to the restaurant’s team, the guiding idea came out of extensive travel through Japan \u2014 eating everywhere from humble neighbourhood spots to some of the country’s most celebrated restaurants \u2014 and noticing that what stuck with them wasn’t spectacle, but care: great ingredients, sound technique, and genuine hospitality. That same philosophy carries through to the cocktail program, which draws on Japanese tradition for a list of quietly intricate drinks rather than showy ones.<\/p>
